MV Bhanumathi, a 1987 Batch Indian Revenue Services officer, has served at various Income Tax Commissionerates across India and investigated high-profile cases in her career.
One of the most-feared Income Tax officers in the country known for her no-non-sense attitude and some of the major actions against political leaders and businessmen, MV Bhanumathi, retired from service today after 35 years in service. She was the Director General of Income Tax Investigation in Mumbai and her tenure at the directorate saw major actions across the state.
MV Bhanumathi, a 1987 Batch Indian Revenue Services officer, has served at various Income Tax Commissionerates across India and investigated high-profile cases in her career. On Tuesday, several officers gathered at the Scindia House - the DGIT Mumbai office, to bid farewell to the officer.
Some of the cases during her tenure were search operations which led to attachments of properties worth hundreds of crores in raids on relatives and close aides of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Under the Prohibition of Benami Property Act, action was initiated against former Chief Secretary and Advisor to Maharashtra Chief Minister, Ajoy Mehta, who had purchased a flat in south Mumbai’s Nariman Point. The property was eventually attached.

Detailed searches were carried out on actors Taapsee Pannu and Director Anurag Kashyap by the department.
Multiple properties of Shiv Sena leader Yeshwant Jadhav were attached. Investigations found foreign hawala transactions, following which Jadhav was summoned under FEMA by the Enforcement Directorate.
