
Mumbai chawls renamed after Sharad Pawar, Rajiv Gandhi and Bal Thackeray

The BDD (Bombay Development Directorate) chawls in Mumbai's Worli, Naigaon Area and N M Joshi Marg have been renamed after Bal Thackeray, Sharad Pawar and Rajiv Gandhi respectively.
Mumbai’s BDD (Bombay Development Directorate) chawl clusters have been renamed after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and late Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. The change was brought into effect after a resolution by the Maha Vikas Aghadi government on Saturday.
The BDD chawl at Worli is now named after Bal Thackeray, the BDD chawl in Naigaon area is named after Sharad Pawar and the BDD chawl along N M Joshi Marg is named after Rajiv Gandhi.
The announcement for the change in names was made during the budget session of the assembly this year.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi government has already launched the Rs 17,000 crore redevelopment plan of BDD Chawls in phases. The redevelopment plan involves 121 buildings in Worli, 42 at Naigaon, and 32 at NM Joshi Marg in Lower Parel.
Reports say that the residents of more than 16,000 apartments will be rehoused for free in the new buildings.
