Mukul Roy is BJP MLA: Bengal assembly speaker on disqualification plea
India Today
West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee stated that Mukul Roy is a BJP MLA.
West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee ruled that Mukul Roy is a BJP MLA. The Speaker’s conclusion follows after a petition was filed by Suvendu Adhikari in high court seeking disqualification of Mukul Roy after the latter joined the TMC.
The high court had asked the assembly speaker to review the matter.
On Wednesday, the West Bengal assembly speaker upheld his earlier decision that Mukul Roy continues to remain a BJP MLA.
Biman Banerjee said, "The Calcutta HC had given me a time frame of one month to dispose off the matter. I am clearly of the view that the petitioner has failed to prove the contents of the electronic evidence produced by him in support of his contention made out in the petition. As such, I have no other option but to uphold the same decision pronounced by me earlier on 11.2.2022.”
Mukul Roy, who had won from the Krishnanagar Uttar seat on a BJP ticket, left the party to rejoin the TMC in June 2021.
Afterwards, Suvendu Adhikari filed a plea in the High Court asking for Roy to be first removed as the chairman of PAC and secondly be disqualified as an MLA.
The court had asked the assembly speaker to conclude the matter whether Mukul Roy was a BJP MLA or not.
