MP minor gang-rape case: SC stays operation of death sentence awarded to convict

The SC stayed the operation of the death sentence of a rape convict while hearing an appeal filed by him challenging the MP High Court judgement.
The Supreme Court stayed the execution of the death sentence of a man convicted of raping a seven-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district.
The apex court said that till a decision is made on the application, the death punishment will not be implemented while hearing the appeal filed by one of the convicts, Irfan, challenging the Madhya Pradesh High Court's decision affirming the death order which had been confirmed by the lower court.
In the Supreme Court, a bench of Justices Uday Umesh Lalit, S Ravindra Bhatt and PS Narasimha issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government on Irfan's petition seeking a report on the mental condition of the convict and the behavior meted out to him in jail.
The court said that before the hearing on March 22, all the information should be submitted to the bench.
On June 26, 2018, two men abducted and gang-raped a child from a school in Mandsaur.
After receiving a missing complaint from a relative, the police swung into action and found the girl in an injured condition. She was admitted to a hospital with her private parts badly bruised and severed intestines.
After her condition improved, the girl, in a statement, named Irfan and Asif. They were arrested and produced in court within 48 hours.
