
Mayor presents ₹19.31-crore deficit budget

COIMBATORE Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar presented her first budget for the city at a special meeting of the council on Wednesday. The budget for 2022-23 showed a deficit of ₹19.31 crore as the total expenditure at ₹2,337 crore was more than total revenue at ₹2,317.97 crore.
In her budgetary announcement, Ms. Anandakumar said the civic body would spend ₹5.36 crore on latest water meters to improve water supply from once in 5-12 days to once in two days in added areas.
It had submitted a proposal to the Directorate of Municipal Administration for approval.
The Corporation would upgrade the Special School for Differently Children in R.S. Puram into a model school under Sarva Siksha Abiyan scheme at ₹2.46 crore to construct hostel and train students in fine arts and sports.
The Corporation would earmark ₹8 crore for improving infrastructure in schools, ₹50 lakh up supply books to school libraries, ₹7.86 crore to purchase 105 small goods carriers to transport waste, 3.50 crore to rebuild the waste transfer station on Sathyamangalam Road, and construct new roads linking the existing roads at ₹144.80 crore.
The Corporation hoped to secure funds from the Coimbatore Local Planning Authority.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said that on the lines of the farmers’ protest that compelled the Centre to withdraw farm laws, a protest would be launched with like-minded political parties and organisations representing the poor to demand repeal of the new Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) and restoration of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Act (MGNREGA).
