Mangaluru's 2026-27 budget includes an innovation fund, Vision 2032, cotton bag distribution, and a task force for urban improvement.
Setting up an innovation fund to prevent the foul smell emanating from the solid waste management site at Pachchanady, preparing a Vision 2032 document for urban planning, forming a special task force for clearing black spots, preparing a project report for building 22-k.m. long coastal road, and distributing two cotton hand bags to each house are some of the initiatives proposed by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) in its budget for 2026-27.
The Administrator of the MCC and Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada H. V. Darshan presented the Budget on March 26 in the absence of an elected council in the civic body. The five-year term of the elected council ended on February 27, 2025.
Innovation fund
Mr. Darshan said that the MCC has set aside ₹50 lakh for the innovation fund. It will be given to start-ups, individuals or organisations that will come out with a solution, using modern technology, to prevent the foul smell emanating at Pachchanady site. The foul smell has been affecting many residents in the surroundings of Pachchanady. The same fund can also be utilised for getting modern technology-based solutions to other pressing issues in the city, he said.
Vision 2032
The Deputy Commissioner said that ₹30 lakh has been reserved for preparing a detailed project report (Vision 2032) for urban planning. The DPR will propose a road map for comprehensive growth of the city by 2032. The civic body has aimed at making the city a model one with modern enhanced facilities. The DPR will be prepared by taking suggestions from civil society members, elected representatives, traders, builders, transporters and other organisations.
