Man arrested for killing 5 Sikhs in Kanpur in 1984

The accused allegedly killed five Sikhs in Kanpur in the riots that followed the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The special investigation team (SIT) which is investigating the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Kanpur arrested another accused on Wednesday. The man identified as Kamal Singh allegedly killed five Sikhs during the riots that followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Balendu Bhushan, Deputy Inspector General, SIT said three cases were registered against Kamal and his arrest is an important development. “All the accused will be in our custody soon,” added Bhushan.
The SIT has so far identified 96 accused in 12 cases, out of which 73 are yet to be arrested.
The investigating team was formed in 2019 by the Centre to reopen the seven anti-Sikh riot cases from 1984, where the accused were either acquitted or the trial closed.
