Maharashtra woman killed in fight between two families over daughter’s WhatsApp status

Preeti Prasad put up a WhatsApp status that her neighbour didn’t like. The neighbour, her mother and brother came to Preeti’s house to confront her. A brawl ensued, and Preeti’s mother was injured. She was rushed to the hospital, but she died the next day.
A 48-year-old woman in Maharashtra’s Palghar district died after suffering grievous injuries in a fight that took place between two families. The fight took place on February 10, allegedly over a WhatsApp status put up by the deceased’s daughter.
Three people, including two women, were arrested for culpable homicide by the police. The incident took place in Shivaji Nagar area of Boisar.
Police said that Preeti Prasad (20), had put up a WhatsApp status which did not go well with her 17-year-old friend who lives in the same neighbourhood.
The teenager, along with her mother and brother, went to Preeti’s house to confront her. It escalated into a brawl and Lilavati Devi Prasad suffered injuries on her ribs. She was rushed to the hospital but she died on Friday, February 13.
Police said that the woman had other health issues but it was the injury during the fight that resulted in her death.
Based on the victim’s complaint, Boisar police registered an FIR under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the minor girl, her mother, brother and sister.
Inspector Suresh Kadam, head of Boisar police station, said, “I cannot disclose the Whatsapp status but there was no need for the minor to take it personally.” The minor girl has been sent to a correction home, reported Indian Express.
