Ten police officers were suspended in Thane on Wednesday for allegedly robbing Rs 6 crore from a local resident.
Ten policemen, including three officers, were suspended in Maharashtra's Thane district on Wednesday. The suspended policemen are under inquiry for allegedly robbing Rs 6 crore from the residence of a Thane local.
The crime came to the notice of the Thane police commissioner, Jai Jeet Singh after a complaint letter accused the police officers of carrying out a robbery at the house of a Thane resident. The complaint was also sent to Maharashtra's home minister and said that the Mumbra police inspector along with two sub inspectors, staffers and other non-uniformed persons raided the residence of Faizal Memon after Tuesday midnight in the early hours of April 12.
The accused officers have been identified as crime police inspector at Mumbra police station, Gitaram Shewale and his junior officers, Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Ravi Madne and PSI Harshal Kale.

The letter said that the police officials reached Memon’s residence and found thirty boxes of Rs 1 crore each. All the boxes were taken to the Mumbra police station in the senior police inspector’s cabin. Shewale then started questioning Memon about where he got the money from.
Memon told them that it was all his hard-earned money, but Shevale and his juniors did not believe him and allegedly assaulted him. According to the letter, the policemen then told Memon to give half the amount to them but he pleaded and agreed to give Rs 2 crore to Shewale. However, the policemen took Rs 6 crore and handed over the remaining Rs 24 crore back to Memon.
The letter also said that inspector Shevale had called senior police inspector Ashok Kadlag and informed him about the situation. The letter added that CCTV footage from the inspector’s cabin can be checked and a case can be registered against the accused police officers. Following the complaint, an inquiry was ordered by the police commissioner, Jai Jeet Singh against the accused police officers. The ten accused policemen were then suspended on Wednesday pending an inquiry.
