Flood alert issued for three districts due to rising water levels in KRP and Kelavarapalli dams, causing road blockades.
Flood alert was sounded for three districts after the fourth shutter gate of KRP reservoir in Krishnagiri was opened on Tuesday (May 20, 2025) on the heels of the sudden spate in inflow into the reservoir.
The heavy rains over the past 48 hours had increased the inflow into KRP dam, with it touching 51 ft. of the total 52 ft. storage capacity. The inflow into the dam was 3,208 cusecs of water, while the outflow was 4,000 cusecs. The district administration issued a flood warning to Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Tiruvannamalai cautioning public against venturing into the river or taking livestock into the river.
The spate in the inflow also resulted from the opening of the Kelavarapalli dam in Hosur on Monday night. Late Monday night, district administration opened all the shutters of Kelavarapalli dam to release 2,200 cusecs of water after the dam crossed 40.67 ft. of its total capacity of 44 ft. A late night advisory was also issued to the public in and around Kelavarapalli of route diversions.
As of Tuesday morning, the inflow into the dam was 1101.79 cusecs, while the outflow was 1449.47 cusecs. Kelavarapalli dam received 30 mm of water on Monday.
The heavy outflow from the opening of the Kelavarapalli reservoir also saw mounds of floating foam churned by the frothy waters choking the waterways of Thenpennai river. The dam waters, as has been the phenomenon every year, flowed in contamination with the off-white foam churned by industrial effluents washed down from Bengaluru’s outskirts choking up the head of Thenpennai river here.
The foam from the water released from the dam had piled up over the banks and caused road blockades forcing public to seek alternate routes for commute.
Krishnagiri received an average rainfall of 24.31 mm with Hosur recording the maximum rainfall of 74.4mm, followed by Denkanikottai receiving 57 mm.
