Koneru Humpy and P.V. Sindhu launch SAAP League to foster young athletes' development and structured competition in Andhra Pradesh.
Structured competition at a young age is the foundation for producing global champions, said two-time Women’s World Rapid Chess Champion Koneru Humpy.
She was speaking after unveiling a trophy for the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) League, along with two-time Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu and SAAP vice-chairperson and managing director S. Bharani at Berm Park in Vijayawada on Monday (February 16, 2026). The SAAP League reflects serious intent, she added.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Sindhu appreciated Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu for his unwavering commitment to building a structured sports ecosystem. Initiatives like the SAAP League give young athletes clarity, competition, and confidence to aim for international excellence, she added.
The SAAP League institutionalises merit, transparency, and long-term athlete development. Conducted across the State throughout the year, it creates a structured pathway where performance is consistently nurtured through professional support, and competitive exposure, said Ms. Bharani.
She said it is designed for athletes above 12 years and under 20 and will feature 31 sports, including five beach sports, three para sports, and three masters disciplines. The competition framework begins with intra-district selection and trials, followed by inter-district league competitions, ensuring wide participation along with sustained, high-quality competitive exposure throughout the year.
