
Kerala dowry death: Husband sentenced to 10 years in jail for driving wife to suicide

A Kerala court has sentenced the husband of Vismaya to 10 years in jail for dowry death and abetting wife's suicide.
A Kerala court on Tuesday ordered 10 years imprisonment for the husband of Vismaya, a medical student who hanged herself in her marital home in June 2021, for dowry death and abetting her suicide.
The Kollam district court sentenced the husband Kiran Kumar to 10 years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 12.55 lakh.
Kiran Kumar was sentenced under IPC 304 for dowry abuse, six years imprisonment under IPC 306 for incitement to suicide and a fine of Rs 2 lakh. If the convict fails to pay, the fine carries a further six months of imprisonment.
For the domestic violence, husband Kirankumar was punished with two years imprisonment and a Rs 0.5 lakh fine under IPC 498A. Failure to pay the fine carries a further three months of imprisonment.

Under Section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, Kiran Kumar has been sentenced to six years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh. Failure to pay the fine carries a further 18 months of imprisonment.
Under section four of the Dowry Prohibition Act, the court ordered one-year jail term and a fine of Rs 5,000. Failure to pay the fine carries a further 15 days of imprisonment. These sentences will run concurrently.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
