A 22-year-old woman was found dead at her residence in Karnataka's Bidar district, with police registering a case against her husband and in-laws.
A 22-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after sustained mental harassment by her husband and in-laws in Bidar district. The victim, Anjanabai Patil, was found hanging at her residence on February 6. She had been married for three years and is survived by her 11-month-old baby girl.
Based on the victim's father's complaint, police have registered an FIR against her husband Shekhar Patil, mother-in-law Arunabai, and father-in-law Chandrakant. The complaint alleges continuous mental harassment, frequent quarrels over Shekhar returning home late due to his pani-puri business, and serious claims that Anjanabai was indirectly pressured to enter prostitution.
Relatives have raised suspicion that the death may not be a suicide and have demanded a thorough probe, alleging the incident could have been staged. Police visited the spot, collected evidence, and initiated a detailed investigation to ascertain whether it is a case of suicide due to harassment, murder, or any other form of coercion. Anjanabai was married in 2022 to Shekhar Patil.
Shekhar runs a pani-puri business and used to return home daily between 11 pm and 12 midnight. Anjanabai objected and asked him to come home earlier. When the matter was raised with her in-laws, they argued that the business continued late into the night and that she must adjust. The in-laws also allegedly picked up quarrels with her, saying she was not good and did not know how to cook.
The complainant further said that Anjanabai had informed the family that Shekhar, Chandrakant, and Arunabai were harassing her.
“My daughter also informed me over the phone that her mother-in-law, Arunabai, was allegedly maintaining an illicit relationship and was pressuring her daily to engage in prostitution,” the complaint said. When the family contacted Arunabai over the phone regarding this, the dispute ensued.
