The world woke up to the melancholic news of dance maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj’s death today, January 17. The Kathak legend passed away at the age of 83 due to an alleged heart attack, informed his family members. Pandit Birju Maharaj was an exponent of the Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow. He was the recipient of several prestigious awards, such as the Padma Vibhushan, National Nritya Shiromani Award, among others, for his exponential contribution to the Kathak dance form in India.
