Five Nova Scotians, including a popular musician and a former premier, have been appointed to the Order of Nova Scotia for 2025.
In a news release Tuesday, Lt.-Gov. Mike Savage said the recipients are being honoured for their “outstanding contributions to their professions and communities.”
Dartmouth-based rocker Joel Plaskett was recognized for his musical achievements and for his philanthropy. The Juno Award winner and frequent nominee has also raised funds for charitable causes through various performances.
Darrell Dexter, a lawyer and former NDP leader who served as Nova Scotia premier in 2009, received the honour for his pro bono service to community organizations.
Educator and human rights advocate Carolyn G. Thomas of East Preston was appointed for her contributions in education, government and community development.
Thomas is the author of Underground Railroad to Nova Scotia in which she recorded the early history of African Nova Scotians in the province. She was the recipient of a Governor General's Caring Canadian Award in 2008 for her dedication in social justice and equality.
John George (Jack) Flemming of Halifax and Rankin MacSween of Ironville in Cape Breton were recognized for their contributions to local community welfare and business development.
The new appointees will be formally recognized in a ceremony at Government House in Halifax in the spring, the release said.
The Order of Nova Scotia, the highest honour in the province, recognizes people with outstanding achievement or service that benefits Nova Scotia and its people.
Since it was established in 2001, 132 members have been appointed to the order.
