Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan was released from Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur jail on Friday, May 20 after 27 months. He was booked in a number of cases.
After his release, India Today spoke to Azam Khan about the cases against him, the Gyanvapi mosque issue and what future beholds for the SP leader.
JAUHAR UNIVERSITY IS MY CRIME
A team of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials are investigating a money laundering case against Azam Khan linked to Jauhar University. The documents pertain to Jauhar University, whose permanent Chancellor is SP MLA Azam Khan.
"I was called mafia, Jauhar University is my crime. matter of interim bail. I was accused of stealing goats and hens. In 20 days, I became the biggest criminal. I was on the election agenda," Khan told India Today.
"I didn't get as many votes outside as I got while in jail. In the legal battle the truth is THE truth," he added.
"There were restrictions imposed on visitors to jail by the district administration. I could not even meet anyone. I didn't know anything about the outside world. I lived in a very small cell, which the British used to keep prisoners before execution," he alleged.
