Iran fired its first missiles towards Israel on Monday (March 9, 2026) after the appointment of the Islamic republic’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, state broadcaster IRIB said.
Iran’s Assembly of Experts has named Mojtaba Khamenei to replace his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new supreme leader, state media reported on Sunday (March 8, 2026). Iran’s Revolutionary Guards pledged allegiance to Mr. Mojtaba, saying they are “ready for complete obedience and self-sacrifice”.

Meanwhile, oil prices eclipsed $100 per barrel for the first time in more than three-and-a-half years on Sunday as the Iran war hinders production and shipping in West Asia.
U.S. President Donald Trump had previously dismissed the younger Khamenei as a “lightweight”, and insisted again Sunday that he should have a say in appointing a new leader.
