iPhone 16 becomes No 1 worldwide: 4 reasons why this old phone is beating others
India Today
Despite being a previous-generation model, the iPhone 16 ended 2025 as the world's best-selling smartphone, beating newer rivals on price, performance and long-term value.
Apple’s iPhone 16 may no longer be the newest iPhone on the shelf, but it has quietly achieved something bigger. According to the latest report from Counterpoint Research, the iPhone 16 (review) was the best-selling smartphone in the world in 2025, beating newer rivals and proving that being “old” does not always mean being irrelevant.
The report shows that Apple and Samsung continued to dominate global smartphone sales for the fourth straight year, together accounting for 19 per cent of all phones sold worldwide. Apple alone claimed seven of the top ten spots, while Samsung took the remaining three. At the top of the list sat the iPhone 16, a phone launched back in 2024 that is still selling in large numbers today.
What makes this even more interesting is the timing. Apple launched the iPhone 17 series in September, and those phones sold well too. In fact, the iPhone 17 lineup recorded 16 percent higher sales than the iPhone 16 series during its first full quarter, helped by strong demand in the US, China and Western Europe. The base iPhone 17 (review) model performed especially well, thanks to upgrades like a smoother 120Hz display and doubled base storage.
Yet, despite newer models grabbing headlines, the iPhone 16 continued to attract buyers across markets. Apple still sells the device as part of its current lineup, starting at Rs 69,900 in India, and that decision appears to be paying off.
First, it sits in the right price range for most buyers.
The iPhone 16 offers a premium Apple experience without crossing into ultra-expensive territory. Compared to Pro models and high-end Android phones, it feels easier to justify. Over time, prices settled across regions through offers and carrier plans, making it a comfortable choice for people who want a reliable iPhone without spending extra on features they may not need.
