CPI(M) urges Tamil Nadu government to honor S.S. Rajagopalan with a research fellowship for his educational contributions.
The secretary of the CPI(M) State unit P. Shanmugam on Wednesday (February 4, 2026) requested the Tamil Nadu government to institute a research fellowship in the name of eminent educationist S.S. Rajagopalan, who died in Chennai.
In his condolence message, Mr. Shanmugam said Rajagopalan, popularly known as SSR, worked to ensure quality education for all in the mother tongue in an unequal society. He recalled that Rajagopalan’s father had launched a Tamil-medium school in Coimbatore under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi.
An activist, Rajagopalan worked closely with teachers’ associations and championed constructive initiatives in the field of education. He was also a member of the committee constituted by the DMK government to frame the Samacheer Kalvi system (uniform school education).
