Indrani Mukerjea, one of the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, has been granted bail.
Indrani Mukerjea, one of the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, has been granted bail by the Supreme Court today.
While granting bail to the murder accused, Indrani Mukerjea, the Supreme Court said the conditions imposed by the Bombay High Court while granting bail to her former husband, Peter Mukerjea, would apply to her too.
"We are granting bail to Indrani Mukerjea. 6.5 years is too long," said the court.
“This case is based on circumstantial evidence. We are not making comments on the merits of the case. Even if 50 per cent of witnesses are given up by the prosecution, the trial would not be over soon," the court said.
The Sheena Bora case has been full of twists and turns for almost a decade. For the Mumbai Police and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), it was a murder case discovered accidentally when a police team was probing an illegal arms case. The accused in the Sheena Bora murder case is her mother, Indrani Mukerjea, a former media executive.
On December 6, 2021, Indrani Mukerjea claimed that her daughter Sheena Bora was alive and possibly living in Jammu and Kashmir. In August 2021, the CBI closed further probe into the murder case. Driver Shaymvar Rai turned approver in the case.
In July 2021, a special CBI court rejected Indrani Mukerjea's plea and maintained that she had played an active role in the abduction, murder, and disposal of the body of Sheena Bora. In March 2020, Peter Mukerjea, Indrani Mukerjea’s ex-husband got bail and walked out of jail after spending four years behind bars.
