
IAS officer arrested for sexually harassing IIT student in Jharkhand's Khunti

An IIT student filed a police complaint in Jharkhand’s Khunti district stating she was sexually harassed by an IAS officer, identified as Sub-Divisional Magistrate Syed Riyaz Ahmed. Police arrested him after an initial probe revealed the allegation was true.
Police officials detained an IAS officer on Tuesday, July 5, in Jharkhand's Khunti district for allegedly sexually harassing an IIT student. The officer, identified as Syed Riaz Ahmed, is a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Aman Kumar, he was taken into custody on Monday night after a case was lodged at the women's police station. The case was filed under IPC sections 354A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), he added.
The victim, who was among eight IIT engineering students, had come to Jharkhand's Khunti from other states for training, said the SP.
A dinner was hosted at the Deputy Development Commissioner's residence on Saturday, and the students were invited to take part in it. Liquor was served to all the guests, including the students at the party, said SP Aman Kumar.
According to the victim’s statement to the police, the accused IAS officer had allegedly sexually harassed her there after noticing that she was alone.
The SP said that initial investigations revealed that the allegation was true. After that, Ahmed and some guests who attended the party were questioned,
The student was sent for a medical checkup, said the officer, and added that a detailed investigation into the incident was underway.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
