Police in Coimbatore heighten vigilance for Babri Masjid demolition anniversary, deploying 1,000 personnel and conducting surprise checks.
The police heightened vigil across Coimbatore district on Friday in view of the anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid.
The Coimbatore City Police deployed around 600 police personnel at various important places in the city from Thursday, covering places of worship, bus stands, railway stations, malls and other important locations.
The police carried out surprise vehicle checks and verified the whereabouts of people staying in lodges and hotels.
The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) carried out checks at various places, supported by the dog squad of the city police. A senior police officer said that the vigil would be continued till Saturday morning.
The Coimbatore District Police deployed a total of 1,000 police personnel for security duties across the rural parts of the district.
While special focus was given to Mettupalayam and Pollachi towns, the police maintained vigil at important places of worship, bus stands, railway stations and other places, where people gather in large numbers. BDDS teams carried out searches at railway stations and bus stands.
The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) staged a protest and meeting at Ukkadam on Friday evening, which was attended by hundreds of men and women. The participants raised slogans, condemning the demolition of the masjid 32 years ago. SDPI Coimbatore district secretary Mohamed Ishak presided over the meeting.
