Ghaziabad society residents risk life to use elevator in another tower

Residents of a housing society in Greater Noida used a wooden plank to cross between two 18-storey buildings after the lift in one stopped working.

Several residents of an 18-storey building of a housing society in Greater Noida were seen crossing over to the adjacent tower using wooden planks on Sunday after the only lift in the building stopped working five days earlier.

According to TOI, school children have also been using wooden planks to get over to the other building. Residents living on the upper floors of Tower D of Elegant Ville told the news agency that it was easier to cross over to Tower E and use the lift of that building.

Residents have put two plywood slabs on either side of the parapet wall and a third to close the gap between the two buildings, which measures approximately two metres.

A resident of Tower D told TOI that despite knowing the risk involved in crossing between the two buildings, they cannot take the stairs of the 18 floors every day. He added that residents have been taking their children too, since they have school and can’t afford to skip it as exams are on.

Another resident said she and her husband use the plank as they have to reach their office on time and it is not possible to take the stairs every day. Apart from offices or schools, residents also need to go out to buy essentials.

An official of the maintenance agency refuted the residents’ claims that the lift stopped working five days ago and said it was only two days since the lift became defunct. He also insisted that it had been repaired on Sunday evening.
