Game over for Imran Khan: Fiery speeches expected as Pakistan National Assembly debates no-confidence motion today

Some strong speeches by firebrand leaders of both the Opposition and the government are expected at Pakistan's National Assembly session where debate on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan will take place

After a three-day gap, Pakistan's National Assembly session will resume today (Thursday) where debate on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan will take place.

On Wednesday, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), an erstwhile ally of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, finally announced its decision and chose to side with the Opposition over the no-confidence vote. The party has seven seats in the National Assembly and its falling out with the ruling party is being seen as the final nail in the coffin of the Imran Khan government.

The Opposition is, therefore, naturally confident about its position and is expected to boast this strength during the National Assembly session which will take place at 3.30 pm. Some strong speeches by firebrand leaders of both the Opposition and the government are expected, which would further raise the already high political temperature.

Meanwhile, the pressure is mounting on PM Imran Khan to tender his resignation and leave the prime ministership with his 'dignity' intact. Even those who were urging Khan to continue fighting the attempts to overthrow him have now given up. Kamran Khan, senior journalist who is known to be close to both Imran Khan and the establishment (and was previously hoping that Khan will somehow survive this storm), has now also advised him to step down.

However, PM Imran Khan appears to be adamant and continues to suggest that he has been a victim of a "foreign conspiracy". He mentioned a "threatening letter" during his speech at Sunday's public gathering by the PTI in Islamabad, and said he had evidence of an "international conspiracy" to dislodge his government. The contents of the letter were not made public, and the PM was criticised for not first taking up this issue in Parliament.
