
Five held for trying to murder businessman in Udupi

Udupi police have arrested five persons in connection with the attempt to murder a businessman, following verbal duel in a hotel, near PPC cross in Badagabettu in Udupi on January 30.

Udupi police have arrested five persons in connection with the attempt to murder a businessman, following verbal duel in a hotel, near PPC cross in Badagabettu in Udupi on January 30.
The police gave names of the arrested as Ramanand Pai, 42, son of late Radhakrishna Pai who owned Radhakrishna General Stores in Udupi; Akshath Pai,27; Sushant, 25; Santosh Koraga, 38; and Shashank Nayak, 25; all from Udupi.
In a complaint, businessman Sharath Kundar said he had gone with his friends to Hakuna Matata hotel in Badagabettu for dinner on January 30. His friends Ramanand Pai and Akshat Pai also joined for the dinner. During the dinner, Kundar’s hand touched Ramanand Pai’s hand and there was skirmish between the two. When he was on his way home, Kundar received a call from Akshath Pai asking the latter to stop at PPC cross, as he had to discuss about the skirmish in the hotel.
Ramanand Pai, Akshath Pai and five others came to the location at around 11.30 p.m. in two multi-utility vehicles. Ramanand Pai used a sharp weapon to hit Kundar, who prevented it by holding his hand. When Kundar’s friends raised an alarm, Ramanand Pai and others left the place by threatening Kundar of his life, Mr. Kundar stated. Kundar filed a complaint after getting admitted to a private hospital in Udupi.
The police said a team headed by Udupi Town Police Sub-Inspector arrested Ramanand Pai, Akshath Pai and three other accused persons from a hideout in Yellapur in Uttara Kannada district on Friday. They were accused of offences punishable under Sections 189(2) (unlawful assembly),191(2) (rioting),191(3),118(2) (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) ,109 (attempt to murder), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
