The former husband, Mahesh, who had been working abroad, allegedly entered the apartment and attacked Sunitha with two sharp-edged weapons, believed to be a knife and a sickle. She died on the spot due to the injuries, according to police.
The incident occurred at around 12.15 pm on Wednesday.
The couple had married in 2022 and obtained a mutual divorce in 2024. Sunitha remarried in April 2025. Investigators are also examining claims that the pending case had affected his ability to travel abroad.
According to police, after their marriage in India, Mahesh had gone to Canada and Sunitha later joined him there. However, differences arose between the couple, and after staying with him for five days, she returned to India and subsequently filed a domestic violence case against him in Maharashtra.
In March last year, the accused returned to India following the death of his mother but was unable to travel back as a look-out notice had been issued against him in connection with Sunitha’s case, and his passport was suspended. Since then, he has been staying jobless in his native village in Telangana, news agency PTI reported.
