Elon Musk loses half his xAI founding team, researcher who resigned in few weeks says AI work is boring

Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI, has seen two of its founding members resign this week. This brings a total of 6 out of 12 founding members to have left the firm. The latest resignations come just days after xAI was merged with SpaceX.
Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, is going through a busy period. The firm recently merged with SpaceX, as part of Musk’s vision for the future, including plans of AI data centres in space. However, xAI has also had some of its big names leave the firm, with half of its founding team calling it quits already.
On February 10, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, the head of xAI’s reasoning team, announced his resignation on X. Wu hinted that he was leaving the firm for a new AI-related project. He wrote, “It's time for my next chapter. It is an era with full possibilities: a small team armed with AIs can move mountains and redefine what's possible." Tony Wu's post on X, announcing his exit from xAI.
Just a day later, Jimmy Ba, who oversaw research, safety, and enterprise efforts, revealed that he too was leaving xAI. Ba’s message hinted that he was likely going to take some time off for himself. He added, “It’s time to recalibrate my gradient on the big picture.” Jimmy Ba announced his departure from xAI just a day after Tony Wu.
While both Wu and Ba seemed to have left xAI on a positive note, at least when it comes to their farewell messages, their resignations have now brought xAI down to just 6 of its original 12 founding members that established the firm in 2023. 5 of these exits came in a span of less than a year.
Google veteran Christian Szegedy left the Elon Musk-led startup in February 2025. Igor Babuschkin departed in August last year to create a venture firm, while, Microsoft veteran Greg Yang left last month due to health concerns. Infrastructure lead Kyle Kosic was the first of the founding members to quit xAI when he left to join OpenAI in 2024.
The founding members are not the only ones leaving xAI either. As per reports, more than half a dozen other researchers have resigned in the past few weeks.
