Elon Musk asked his AI chatbot Grok to roast Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei after the latter apologised for a leaked message linked to the Trump administration row. The internet soon turned the joke around when users asked Grok to roast Musk and the AI did not hold back.
A fresh online spat involving some of the biggest names in artificial intelligence has turned into a spectacle on X, after Elon Musk publicly asked his AI chatbot Grok to roast Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei following the latter’s apology linked to the Trump administration controversy. What began as a serious policy dispute between an AI company and the US government quickly spilled into social media theatrics, drawing sharp reactions from users who eventually turned the joke back on Musk himself.
The episode traces back to a difficult week for Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude models. The Pentagon recently labelled the firm a “supply chain risk”, a move that effectively prevents defence contractors from working with the company. The decision followed a dispute between the US defence establishment and Anthropic over how its AI models could be used, particularly in areas such as surveillance and autonomous weapons.
As the controversy escalated, a leaked internal message written by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei added fuel to the fire. The message reportedly criticised the Trump administration and suggested that the company faced hostility because it had not offered the kind of praise or financial support that some competitors allegedly did. The leak quickly gained attention online and triggered debate across the tech and political worlds. Anthropic CEO's sorry video goes viral on X. He was talking to The Economist in an interview.
Amodei later issued a public apology for the tone of the message. In a statement published on Anthropic’s website, he said: “It was a difficult day for the company, and I apologize for the tone of the post. It does not reflect my careful or considered views. It was also written six days ago, and is an out-of-date assessment of the current situation.”
He also denied any role in leaking the message and stressed that the company’s priority was supporting US national security efforts. “Our most important priority right now is making sure that our warfighters and national security experts are not deprived of important tools in the middle of major combat operations,” he said.
In a separate interview with The Economist, Amodei again addressed the controversy and tried to clarify the context of the message that had circulated widely online. “I post things in Slack. I post them a lot. And the culture within the company is that I'm very free, and you know, it's not a really considered or refined version of my thinking. It's not what I would say on reflection,” he said.
