Education Minister urges Canadian universities to establish campuses in India for enhanced academic collaboration and workforce development.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met with a delegation of top administrators of 24 Canadian universities on Wednesday (February 4, 2026). They were led by Canada’s Ambassador to India, Christopher Cooter. The Minister urged the delegation to establish international campuses in India to help “build a workforce of the future” and to create models for “advancing the long-term educational agenda”.
University presidents from Canadian Universities are currently in India to “meet with leaders from India’s higher education sector, government, and industry in Goa, New Delhi, and the Gujarat International Finance Tech-City (GIFT City) to explore opportunities for research collaboration, academic exchange and sustainable models of transnational education”, according to a statement by Universities Canada last month.

On Wednesday (February 4, 2026), after meeting with the delegation, Mr. Pradhan posted a statement on social media, calling for “strengthening academic, research and innovation capacities, and talent development”.
“Appreciate their keenness to deepen academic and research engagements with Indian HEIs and further strengthen India-Canada cooperation in higher education,” the Education Minister added.
The Economic Survey of India 2025-26 and a recent report commissioned by the NITI Aayog have called for a focus on the “internationalisation” of the higher education sector in India.
