Drinking water scarcity unlikely this summer in Tiruchi, say officials

Tiruchi officials assure no summer drinking water scarcity, citing improved supply, management measures, and ongoing infrastructure enhancements.
With adequate water availability and strengthened management measures, Tiruchi city is unlikely to face a drinking water shortage during the summer, according to officials.
The Tiruchi Corporation has significantly improved its water supply capacity over the past year by augmenting sources and enhancing infrastructure. The city depends on the Cauvery and the Kollidam for meeting its drinking water requirement.
Officials said the city’s daily drinking water demand was being effectively met, with supply levels improving after earlier shortfalls caused by poor monsoon and declining groundwater.
Measures such as periodic maintenance of water pumps, and pipelines, expansion of distribution networks, and monitoring of supply systems have strengthened the city’s preparedness. The storage levels and supply mechanisms would be sufficient to meet summer demand, an official said.
The newly launched drinking water scheme in Tiruverumbur will supply 27.27 million litres daily (MLD) to residents of Ward Nos. 38, 39, 40, 41, 42 and 43, boosting distribution.
The Corporation has announced plans to secure and strengthen the city’s drinking water supply by undertaking work at a cost of ₹60 crore to augment the water source at the Kollidam.
