Don't use Jailer, Coolie songs in promos: Makers take Chennai Super Kings to court

Makers of Jailer, Jailer 2 and Coolie filed a copyright infringement suit against Chennai Super Kings for using music and dialogues from their films. The case was heard at the Madras High Court on March 13.

The makers of Jailer, Jailer 2 and Coolie, Sun TV Network Limited, sued the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) cricket team, alleging unauthorised use of audio tracks, background music, and dialogues from the films in a promotional video. The video, which promoted the Indian Premier League (IPL) team's new jersey, was released on CSK's social media channels prior to the suit being filed. After issuing a copyright strike, the team removed the video and re-uploaded it with a different music.

The copyright infringement suit was submitted to the Madras High Court, with Sun TV Network asserting that CSK had not obtained permission to use the songs and other content from these films. The makers of the movies maintain that the material is protected by copyright, and any use requires prior authorisation.

The team also alleged that the promo video unveiling the team's jersey was used to sell their merchandise for Rs 2,399, implying that they were used for unauthorised commercial gains.

The contested promotional video quickly drew attention from both film and cricket fans, who recognised the familiar music and dialogues. Sun TV Network subsequently sent a formal notice to CSK team on March 1, detailing the alleged unauthorised use and requesting the team to cease further reproduction or distribution of the material.

As per The Hindu report, senior counsel J Ravindran, representing Sun TV Network, said, "CSK Limited had stopped using the copyright materials after the plaintiff had sent a mail to it on March 1, 2026 highlighting their unauthorised use."

The hearing happened on March 13. The production house produced a copy of an agreement with composer Anirudh Ravichander who had given them all "rights for exploitation of the music" to them.
