CITU and AITUC members rally in Madurai on May Day, demanding protection of workers' rights and opposing new Labour Codes.
Members of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Thursday took out a rally in Madurai in commemoration of May Day which is celebrated to honour the working class.
The members, holding banners and flags, marched from Palanganatham-Madakulam main road to Palanganatham junction. Following the rally, a public meeting was held.
The members said that considering the welfare of the workers, the working hours which were 8 hours per day should be continued and should not be extended to 12 hours.
They opposed the new Labour Codes: the Code on Wages, the Industrial Relations Code, the Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working conditions and the Code on Social Security. They said that these Codes were against the rights and welfare of the workers.
They expressed their concern over implementation of the four Labour Codes. They demanded that the Labour Codes should be repealed. They said that they would observe a nationwide protest on May 20 against the Central government’s move to implement the four Labour Codes.
The members also expressed their concern over rise in prices of essential commodities. They said that the people were affected by the price rise. The members urged the Central government to take steps to control price rise.
