Dip in price of tomatoes in Tiruchi
The Hindu
Tomato prices in Tiruchi have dropped significantly due to increased supply, with premium varieties now at ₹15 per kg.
The price of tomato has plummeted in the city markets due to steady increase in supply.
A kg of premium quality tomato was sold at ₹15 by retail traders at Gandhi Market on Tuesday, while second grade varieties were priced between ₹10 and ₹13. In the wholesale market, a box of tomatoes weighing 25 kg was quoted at ₹350.
As the market continues to get excess loads of tomatoes from cultivation centres, many seasonal traders have turned hawkers and selling them at the doorstep of customers in mini load carriers. Farmers and seasonal traders, who operate on the roadside of Gandhi Market, are pitching them at throwaway prices.
During Pongal holidays, the price of tomatoes hovered around ₹50 to ₹60 a kg. It went up marginally during the marriage season in the Tamil month of Thai. The prices came down after that.
Heavy arrival of tomatoes has been attributed for the downward trend. As against the demand of about 15 to 18 loads of tomato to meet the requirements of the residents of Tiruchi and adjoining areas, the city market receives about 25 loads. In addition to the supply from Bengaluru and Andhra Pradesh, the traders get them from many places across the State such as Pollachi, Oddanchathiram, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Hosur and Udumalpettai.
The Tiruchi market also receives country tomato loads from Manapparai, Vaiyampatti, Marungapuri and Ariyalur,
