Did your health insurance premium jump without notice? Here's what's going on
India Today
Many people are seeing sudden jumps in their health insurance premiums at renewal. The reasons aren't always clear, and insurers don't always explain them. In this article, we break down the possible reasons behind these sudden premium jumps.
A Delhi-based policyholder was expecting a modest increase in his parents’ health insurance premium this year. Instead, it jumped from around Rs 32,000 to Rs 53,500, marking a nearly 70% increase for the same Rs 10 lakh cover.
In Bengaluru, a 41-year-old PR consultant saw a similar, though less dramatic, spike. Her premium rose from Rs 16,112 to Rs 21,296 at renewal, despite no claims.
In another instance shared with IndiaToday.in, a policyholder said his premium had nearly doubled within a year, without any clear explanation from the insurer.
If your health insurance premium has gone up sharply, you are not alone. Across India, policyholders are reporting steep and often confusing increases, with little clarity on what is driving them.
A recent nationwide survey by LocalCircles suggests these experiences are far from isolated. The survey, which gathered over 54,000 responses, found that more than 7 in 10 policyholders reported premium increases of 50% to 200% over the last three years.
In the Delhi case, the increase was linked, in part, to an age-based revision.
