The possible recovery comes after a very weak week for Dalal Street. Last week, both major indices recorded their sharpest weekly fall in years as the war in the Middle East created fears of energy supply disruption and pushed oil prices higher.
The Nifty fell 5.3% during the previous week, while the Sensex dropped 5.5%. This was the worst weekly performance for the Nifty since mid-2022 and for the Sensex since 2020.
The heavy fall came after the US and Israel launched a bombing campaign on Iran at the end of February. Following this, Iran slowed or stopped traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes.
The Strait of Hormuz handles about 20% of the world’s oil supply. Any disruption in this route raises concerns about energy shortages and higher fuel prices across the world.
