Dhurandhar 2 vs Ustaad Bhagat Singh: Superhit rage takes on Pawan Kalyan's stardom
India Today
Yash's Toxic has been postponed from March 19, but Dhurandhar: The Revenge has now reportedly run into Pawan Kalyan's Ustaad Bhagat Singh on that date. With the Ranveer Singh-starrer riding hype as few films do and Andhra Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan returning after They Call Him OG, the clash could be the most intriguing one at the Telugu box office in 2026.
When Yash’s Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups moved out of its desired release slot of March 19, trade circles immediately assumed that Dhurandhar 2 – officially, Dhurandhar: The Revenge – would enjoy a clear runway at the box office. The sequel had already built massive hype across the country, and without another large-scale pan-Indian film occupying the same window, the path seemed straightforward. But the situation on the ground might be slightly different now, as Ustaad Bhagat Singh, starring Pawan Kalyan, is also releasing on the same date, according to trade sources.
On the surface, Dhurandhar 2's new clash may not appear as big as the one with Toxic, but it is not a small one either. While the Dhurandhar sequel follows up a record-breaking blockbuster and rides national hype, Pawan Kalyan's new film is pitched as a Telugu mass entertainer led by one of South's most influential stars, who is also now the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The genres, scale and primary audience bases differ.
However, the moment the Telugu market enters the discussion, the clash becomes far more significant than it appears. Because Andhra Pradesh and Telangana remain among the most powerful theatrical territories in India. The culture of premieres, benefit shows and fan celebrations has created an ecosystem where a star’s influence can dramatically shape a film’s opening trajectory. When two films with strong expectations arrive in the same space, the box-office dynamics become far more complex.
Very few regions celebrate theatrical cinema like the Telugu states. The opening-day numbers regularly demonstrate how powerful the market can be. Take RRR, which opened with over Rs100 crore gross from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana alone. Many star films have seen openings of Rs 70–80 crore just in the Telugu states.
That figure itself is extraordinary, considering many films and stars from other industries across India struggle to reach such numbers even in their total nationwide run. These numbers underline a simple truth. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana remain among the few territories where fan culture and theatrical excitement can deliver massive opening figures without relying heavily on the rest of the country. That is why every major release, whether Hindi or Telugu, views this market as crucial.
