Despite ban, Covid-19 curbs, traditional bull-taming sport organised in Andhra

Hundreds of people participated in a bull-taming sport organised at Karlagatta village in Andhra’s Chittoor district despite the government’s warning that action would be taken against the organisers.

Hundreds of villagers participated in a bull-taming sport, an inferior version of Tamil Nadu’s Jallikattu, on Sunday, February 13, in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district. Earlier, the administration had issued stern warnings against the organisers.

Local activists allege that local authorities allowed the event under political pressure despite the state having strict Covid-19 curbs.

The event was organised at Karlagatta village in the Santipuram zone of Chittoor district. The event witnessed over a dozen participants, who also suffered injuries. The village is located near the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border in Andhra Pradesh.

They were shifted to the local hospital for treatment. A rumour that a Tamil Nadu youth also died while participating in the event also went viral. However, police have denied any casualties.

Reportedly, a team of Karnataka policemen also reached the spot to stop the event. However, they were chased away by the mob.
