In a bid to improve connectivity between Delhi and the Vaishno Devi shrine located in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took the initiative to construct Delhi-Amritsar-Katra corridor, under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
A 670-km greenfield expressway project will connect Bahadurgarh border in Delhi with Katra via Nakodar and Gurdaspur in Punjab.
Every year, several pilgrims from Delhi visit Vaishno Devi and it takes about 12 hours to reach Katra. However, through this corridor, the distance between Delhi and Katra will be reduced by 40 km and the pilgrims will be able to reach Katra in only 7 hours, saving five hours of travel.
In addition to this, travellers will be able to reach Amritsar from Delhi in less than 5 hours.
According to a report published in the Navbharat Times (NBT), out of the total 670 km long corridor, the work on 580 km long greenfield corridor has been completed. Meanwhile, the work is still on 90 kms.
Being constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the corridor is said to be ready by June 2024.
