Delhi L-G and CM inaugurate a multi-level parking facility in Nehru Place to ease congestion and enhance urban infrastructure.

Delhi Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday inaugurated a multi-level parking facility at Nehru Place District Centre with capacity to accommodate 660 cars and over 350 two-wheelers. Developed by the Delhi Development Authority under the Nehru Place redevelopment plan, it aims to streamline parking in the area that records an average daily footfall of over 1.3 lakh. A network of 148 CCTV cameras will monitor the facility, which is disabled-friendly and equipped with firefighting systems and nine electric vehicle charging points.

Mr. Saxena said the government’s policy is zero tolerance towards unauthorised parking. “This [facility] fulfils a long-standing public need and will significantly ease congestion and traffic caused by unauthorised parking,” he said. The project has been implemented under the Urban Development Fund scheme of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The six-level structure includes a basement and five upper floors.

Chief Minister Gupta also commended the L-G and the DDA for “making this possible in a short time, addressing one of the city’s biggest challenges – parking.” According to a release issued by the DDA, the structure has been built using Autoclaved Aerated Concrete blocks and shear walls to enhance earthquake resistance. Vacuum Dewatered Concrete technology has been used to improve surface durability and reduce maintenance needs. The facility includes an intelligent parking management system with automated ticketing and digital displays to guide users to vacant spaces.

Projects worth ₹1,075 crore unveiled

During the day, Ms. Gupta along with Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra also laid the foundation stone of projects worth ₹1,075 crore to build drains and roads in the trans-Yamuna region. At the event held at Ramlila Maidan in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar, Ms. Gupta said strong infrastructure is essential for balanced development and these projects will improve traffic management and provide relief from waterlogging.

The projects pertain to the Public Works Department and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department. The CM said the residents of the trans-Yamuna region were awaiting proper development of their lanes, drains and roads and these projects are a “historic step towards ending that wait”.
