Delhi: 73 child labourers rescued from factories; children mostly from UP and Bihar

Around 73 kids who worked as child labourers were rescued from the factories in North Delhi. Most of these teenage kids were brought from small villages of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
A team of a child welfare organisation, Sahyog Care for You, along with the subdivisional magistrate of Narela have rescued 73 children from the factories in North Delhi. These kids were promised better jobs but were working on the minimum wages of Rs 50-100 per day.
Out of these, 38 of them are girls and 35 boys, falling into the age group of 9-15 years.
As per the report published by the Times of India (TOI), these kids were mostly brought from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The team from the NGO working for kids revealed that they used to work as bonded labourers in polishing, toy and fan manufacturing units in north Delhi’s Bawana for 15 hours a day in hazardous conditions.
They were not allowed to go out and were deprived of basic facilities. One of such children was brought from his village in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi with the promise of a decent job at a factory with a monthly salary of Rs 17,000.
Instead, he was put up for a job in a cooler pump-making factory in the Bawana Industrial Area with a daily wage of Rs 50-100.
Shekhar Mahajan, director of Sahyog Care for You, told TOI, “We urge the government to take strict action against factory owners for hiring children and making them work. A generation of children is at risk due to additional financial problems and school closures due to Covid-19.”
