Delays, closures as high winds expected in P.E.I.

Some schools, health centres and provincial civil service offices delayed opening or closed for the day on Monday due to weather conditions. 

Environment Canada issued a yellow warning for Kings County, noting a significant risk of damaging winds. 

Classes at Westisle Family of Schools are cancelled. All other Public Schools Branch classes will proceed following a one-hour delay.

Classes at École Pierre Chiasson are cancelled for the day, while classes at all other CSLF schools will proceed following a one-hour delay. 

Island Montessori Academy’s Stratford and Cornwall campuses have delayed opening until 9 a.m. 

Queens County Residential Services Inc. day program has delayed opening for one hour. 

In-person appointments are cancelled until 9:30 a.m. at Tyne Valley Health Centre, O'Leary Health Centre, Alberton Health Centre and Tignish Health Centre.

All provincial civil service offices in the West Prince area have also delayed opening until 10:30 a.m. 

While Environment Canada's warning is issued only for Kings County, CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin said Islanders across the province could experience strong winds. 

"Facing out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, that's where we'll find those highest gusts. But still, anywhere else across the Island we'll still experience and can experience winds 50 gusting up to 80 km/h throughout the day today," Simpkin said.  

Winds are expected to stay fairly high throughout the day, but should slowly subside towards supper time and overnight, she said.
