The Supreme Court on Tuesday warned the Election Commission and Tamil Nadu government of taking contempt of court action if the local elections for the 9 newly carved districts are not concluded by September 15. Senior advocate PS Narasimha, who appeared for the Election Commission of India, said that there are 7,500 Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu on a daily basis. “We are going for elections at a time when there are a large number of Covid cases in the state,” he said. However, the vacation bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Aniruddha Bose rejected the concerns and said, "Covid is coming as an excuse in all matters. You conduct the election in two months.”
