Construction workers affiliated to the AITUC Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Union staged a protest in front of the Collectorate on Tuesday demanding the benefits assured for all workers.
All construction workers who are registered with the welfare board should get pension, reduction in pension age for construction women workers to 50, maternity benefits for the women workers, and pension of ₹6000 a month are among the demands placed by the workers.
State joint general secretary of the union N. Selvaraj said the workers planned to gather at six different locations in the city, arrive at the Collectorate, and submit their demands to the Collector. However, several workers were taken into custody at the respective locations and released later. The workers, who reached the Collectorate staged a protest.
The workers were assured of pension and maternity benefits but these are yet to be extended, he said.
