
Conservation project bears fruit: Odisha welcomes first natural nesting of gharials after 45 years

Forty-five years after the Odisha government launched a conservation project for gharials, the state is now witnessing natural nesting of the species in the Satkosia range. Read to know details of the successful conservation project.
After 45 years of wait, Odisha is now seeing the first natural nesting of gharials. As many as 28 hatchlings were spotted in the Satkosia range of Mahanadi river in May of this year. Gharial is considered among the most critically endangered and genetically weak species, compared to saltwater crocodiles and muggers.
A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
