College student kills self after Kerala Bank issues notice to family over defaulting on loan

A 20-year-old college student committed suicide by hanging herself at home after Kerala Bank officials put up a notice at her home stating that the property was being attached due to the family’s failure to repay a loan they had taken.
A college student died by suicide after Kerala Bank stuck a notice in front of her house stating that her property was being attached as she had defaulted on paying back a loan.
The incident took place in Kollam’s Sooranad area on Tuesday. The victim, 20-year-old Abhirami, was the only daughter of Aji Kumar and Shalini. Abhirami was found hanging inside her house at around 5 pm. Her parents had gone to the bank to request more time to settle the loan when the incident took place.
Aji Kumar, who was working abroad earlier, had availed a loan of Rs 10 lakh from the Patharam Branch of Kerala Bank five years ago. The repayment was regular initially, but the family fell into a financial crisis after Aji Kumar lost his job due to the Covid pandemic. He had to return to Kerala thereafter.
An amount of Rs 1.5 lakh was repaid last March, and he had sought some time for the repayment of the remaining amount. The bank officials, however, went to the family's house with police protection yesterday morning and installed the notice stating that the property was under the bank’s custody.
Abhirami's parents were at a relative's place when the bank officials came home to erect the board with the property attachment notice.
The family alleged that Abhirami committed suicide over the notice. A case of unnatural death was registered and her mortal remains were handed over today after a post-mortem, informed police officials.
Meanwhile, the bank authorities maintained that the notice was installed in the house as the first stage of action since the repayment failed. Other allegations are baseless, the bank officials added.
