Cold wave to intensify in Himachal, snowfall likely in some areas

Over the next three to four days, the cold wave in Himachal Pradesh is expected to intensify, with snowfall possible in some areas.
The cold wave conditions in Himachal Pradesh is expected to intensify in the next three to four days, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday. The weather department expects snowfall in places like Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, as well as higher reaches of Kullu and Sirmaur in the next 12 hours.
“Cold wave will intensify in Himachal Pradesh during the next 3-4 days. Light to moderate snowfall is likely to occur in Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and higher reaches of Kullu and Sirmaur during the next 12 hours,” the IMD said in its latest weather update on Wednesday.
The Met department had previously forecasted scattered rainfall or snowfall over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad.
The IMD expects fairly widespread rainfall or snowfall in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while thunderstorms and lightning are expected over Uttarakhand on February 9.

Intense cold conditions have persisted in Himachal Pradesh as minimum temperatures stayed below normal in many parts of the state. As per local reports, tribal areas like Keylong received 8 cm of snow and Kukumseri 2 cm on Monday. The weather department in the state had issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning in lower hills on February 8 and 9.
Meanwhile, in the north, the minimum temperature in Kashmir, barring Srinagar, settled below the freezing point on Wednesday, even as the Meteorological department predicted mainly dry weather over the next few days.
