Coimbatore officials inspect high-traffic areas for road safety improvements, including roundabout and U-turn implementations, and pipeline shifting plans.
Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran, along with officials from the Road Safety Wing, conducted a joint inspection of key traffic-congested areas on Saturday, as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety across the city.
The inspection focused on high-traffic locations, including the Red Cross Junction (near the Court Complex), Ukkadam Bus Stand, Old Avinashi Flyover Roundabout, Ramanathapuram Junction, and Sai Baba Colony. These areas have been identified as high-risk zones due to road bends, narrow lanes and heavy congestion.
G. Manuneethi, Divisional Engineer (Road Safety) for Coimbatore Circle, who participated in the inspection, provided insights into the planned measures.
“We have decided to finalise the roundabout at Red Cross Junction, and the design has been submitted to the Corporation for development. At Ramanathapuram Junction, we are planning to implement a U-turn. In SaiBaba Kovil junction, issues related to the UGD pipeline passing through the flyover basement were discussed, and plans for shifting the pipeline were reviewed with the Corporation Commissioner. Additionally, minor works such as removing unauthorised traffic lamp posts and boards, along with identifying cables passing through the junction, were discussed to improve traffic flow at the Sai Baba Kovil Junction,” he said.
The inspection followed a road safety committee meeting chaired by District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati on Thursday, where the Corporation was urged to expedite the completion of UGD and Suez works along the Singanallur to Ondipudur stretch on Trichy Road to address traffic issues. The widening of the Old Avinashi flyover ramps and roundabout was also discussed, with officials exploring expansion options to ease congestion.
