Chief Minister MK Stalin raised concerns about the continuing attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen and Sri Lanka’s decision to auction 105 boats belonging to Tamil Nadu fishermen seized by the Lankan navy.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has written a letter to the External Affairs Minister regarding another attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen by Lankan Nationals.
CM Stalin stated that on January 23, three Tamil fishermen from Vedaranyam were attacked by unknown Sri Lankan nationals.
“300 kilos of fishing net, GPS and VHF radio and 30 litres of diesel were robbed from them and they were physically attacked,” stated CM Stalin and urged the Government of India to take this up with Sri Lankan Government in a stern manner.
“It is observed that continuing attacks on Tamil Nadu by Sri Lankan nationals are clearly aimed at keeping the Tamil Nadu fishermen away from traditional fishing waters of Palk Strait,” stated CM Stalin.
In another letter addressed to PM Modi, CM Stalin raised concern over the Sri Lankan Fisheries Department’s decision to auction 105 fishing boats belonging to Tamil Nadu fishermen seized by Lankan Navy.
“The tearing hurry to conduct an auction without consultation is bound to derail efforts of the Indian High Commission and the Government of Tamilnadu aimed at providing some succour to the poor fishermen who have lost their means of livelihood”, stated CM Stalin.
The CM further requested the Government of India to continue efforts for the transparent disposal of 125 Tamil Nadu boats that were apprehended before 2018 and urged them to ensure the early release of 75 boats and fishing gear apprehended after 2018 by the Sri Lankan Navy.
