Clash erupts in Salem Corporation Council as DMK councillor ‘slaps’ AIADMK leader
A clash broke out between DMK and AIADMK councillors during the Salem Corporation Council meeting on Thursday (May 29, 2025), when a DMK councillor S. Suhashini (Ward 45) allegedly slapped the Leader of the Opposition in the Council, N. Yadavamoorthy, of the AIADMK. The incident prompted Mayor A. Ramachandran to abruptly end the meeting, following which AIADMK councillors staged a sit-in protest in front of the Mayor’s table.
The meeting, chaired by the Mayor in the presence of Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan and Deputy Mayor M. Saradha Devi, was underway when Mr. Yadavamoorthy raised concerns about excessive taxation and demanded a revision. He also alleged that a recently postponed tender process was manipulated to benefit certain individuals, and strongly condemned the move.
His remarks triggered a heated response from DMK councillors, especially the women members, who surrounded him and raised slogans. In the melee, Ms. Suhashini allegedly confronted him before slapping him. Another DMK councillor, M. Pachiyammal (Ward 35), also joined the altercation, further escalating tensions.
AIADMK councillors moved in to shield Mr. Yadavamoorthy. Meanwhile, the national anthem was played, momentarily halting the commotion. The Mayor then adjourned the meeting and left the hall. All seven AIADMK councillors continued their protest, demanding action against Ms. Suhashini. The police later arrived. The councillors said they had informed party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami about the incident and would follow his direction.
Mr. Yadavamoorthy told reporters their protest would continue. He alleged widespread corruption in the Corporation and said his attempt to expose it had provoked the assault. Condemning the attack, he called for strict action. “We only wanted to know who the tender was being favoured for,” he said.
The AIADMK leader later fainted and was taken to the hospital, while the protest at the hall persisted.
