Chief Justice of India NV Ramana laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new high court complex in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar.
The Chief Justice of India, Justice NV Ramana, laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new high court complex in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar.
He said peace shall only prevail when people’s dignity and rights are recognised and protected."One of the major challenges to the protection of rule of law and human rights is the inability of the formal justice system to deliver speedy and affordable justice to all,” the CJI said.
Jammu and Kashmir governor Lieutenant Manoj Sinha and Union law minister Kiran Rijiju along with Supreme Court Judges UU lalit and Sanjay Kishan Kaul were also present at the event.
The Rs 310-crore new court premises is spread across 1.7 lakh sqm and will have all modern facilities and amenities.
Appreciating the efforts of the previous chief justices of Jammu and Kashmir HC, the CJI said," Justice Geeta Mittal, Justice Rajesh Bindal, and Justice Marge have worked hard to make this happen. I compliment each one of them.”
CJI also highlighted the issue of lack of proper infrastructure in the judiciary and said, "I have consistently emphasised the need for the development of infrastructure. Sadly, post-independence, the judicial infrastructure has not been overhauled to meet the demands of growing needs of modern India." He said, "We are far behind in making our courts inclusive and accessible.”
On vacancies and judges’ security, the CJI said, "Around 22% of the posts in the district judiciary are still lying vacant. Steps have to be initiated immediately to fill this gap. Appropriate steps are also required to be taken to provide security and accommodation for all the judges."
